Resources

Image: Geowombats www.flickr.comThe Assembly is a resource-rich council of the Church! However, because we have so much information accrued over 30 years we acknowledge that it can sometimes be difficult to find things.

Listed here are resources that you won't find on individual agency or working group sites. However, our search facility enables you to search across the Assembly site and all related sites, so if it is online and it is a part of the Assembly's functions, it should turn up in the results.

If in doubt, please contact the Assembly and we'll do our very best to assist you in your search.

'Building an Economy for Life' Federal Election Resources 2010

The National Assembly is currently finalising our 2010 Federal Election resource, titled Building an Economy for Life. The resource draws on the theology and policy principles of the Assembly statement An Economy of Life: Re-imagining human progress for a flourishing world. It contains material to help Church members identify important issues facing Australia, listen to politicians and political parties with discernment and cast an informed vote. The resource is not party political and it does not ‘rate’ the policy platforms of the major parties. It explores the implications of the gospel for the development of Australia’s public policy. It is an invitation to think carefully about your vote.

The cornerstone of the resource is the Building an Economy for Life booklet, which explores some of the major areas of public policy and current issues from a Christian perspective on human and ecological wellbeing. The material is an invitation to assess the policies of political parties and candidates in the light of the Christian values that underpin the building of an ‘economy of life’, that is, the values of the reign of God: including justice, peace, compassion, community, hospitality, dignity, generosity and grace. The issues covered include: refugees and asylum seekers, Indigenous justice and reconciliation, international aid and development, policies for older people, and important issues for rural, regional and remote communities. The booklet also includes an election toolkit with useful links to information on all things politics and elections and suggestions for planning activities such as pre-election candidates forums and a meeting with your local MP or candidates.

As well as the booklet, a number of Hot Issues Briefs in the form of A5 flyers will explore particular topical issues such as Indigenous health, the Northern Territory intervention, gender pay equity, freedom of religion and multiculturalism.

    Stay tuned for more information…
