Christian Unity National Conference 2016

The Christian Unity National Conference was held on 21-22 October at the Centre for Theology and Ministry in Melbourne. It brought together 25 people from each of the Synod Ecumenical Relations Committees and the Christian Unity Working Group plus some people who have been involved in ecumenical activities or dialogues.

We heard what was happening around the Uniting Church, heard reports from those linked to the various ecumenical bodies, such as the World Council of Churches, the World Methodist Conference held recently, the World Communion of Reformed Churches coming up next year, the Christian Conference of Asia and the Pacific Conference of Churches.

On the Friday evening there was a panel of three, Jeff Silcock (Lutheran), Katherine Massam (Roman Catholic) and Anna Grant-Henderson (Uniting), who spoke and answered questions on the subject of “Listening to Luther Today.”  This topic was chosen in the light of next year being the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation.  The conference was a valuable time of sharing.  Comment was made that often ecumenical activity happens locally which we do not necessarily hear about but want to encourage.
