A jubilant welcoming

Mascot Uniting Church reverberated with the joyous sounds of worship for the ordination and induction of Rev. Simote Finau.

Family from Tonga, New Zealand and across Sydney joined with representatives of the Navy, the local community and church members from across the Georges River and Sydney Presbyteries to fill the church to standing room only on Saturday 5 March 2016.

Simote was ordained by Georges River Presbytery Chairperson Rev. Salesi Faupula while Sydney Presbytery Chair Rev. Alimoni Taumoepeau did the induction.

Simote is a graduate of the United Theological College (UTC). Dean of Formation at UTC Carolyn Thornley co-celebrated communion with Simote.

Simote’s Tongan culture was incorporated into the service with singing, traditional dress and blowing the conch shell.

Simote comes to the Mascot Uniting Church from the Navy which has provided financial support for his theological training and his ongoing formation in the congregation.

The process of candidature was jointly overseen by his home Presbytery (Georges River) and Uniting Church member of the ADF’s Religious Advisory Committee Rev. Dr Murray Earl.

United Theological College posted an album of photos from the day.
