Mentoring Our Young Leaders

Written by Craig Mitchell

“I saw Christ-like inclusion, empowerment and transformation happen before my eyes. NYALC had the highest quality input, the most engaging learning environment, the most affirmative style of leadership that I could have imagined.”  Anthea Maynard, Tasmania, mentor at the last National Young Adults Leaders Conference.

“NYALC is the best thing I have seen in the UCA. The opportunity to be involved transformed my understanding of the UCA. I loved mentoring would be keen to be involved again. It was a delightful, transformative journey,” says Anthea.

The National Young Adult Leaders Conference gathers young adults from many diverse cultures to be inspired, coached, encouraged and developed as leaders and disciples in a highly relational community. In 2016, NYALC will be held at the Gold Coast on 8-13 July.

At NYALC 2016 young adults participate in daily worship and Bible studies. They are encouraged to listen and learn from the faith and cultures of one another through small groups and intentional conversations. The young adults will visit a local ministry and mission projects and reflect on the contextual theology and leadership approaches of these ministries. They will be empowered to discover or deepen their contribution to the Uniting Church as a missional movement.

NYALC is about learning from one another’s stories across many cultures and from an amazing team of mentors including President Stuart McMillan and the Chair of the UAICC, Rev. Dennis Corowa. Participants have their eyes opened to the richness of the Uniting Church, and most of all they are encouraged in their Christian faith. They also have a lot of fun!

We know that young people are more likely to attend if a leader, minister or mentor taps them on the shoulder and encourages them to attend. Who might you encourage to attend? Would your church consider sponsoring a young adult to attend by donating conference fees or an airfare? Let’s invest in equipping the next generation of Uniting Church leaders.
