Preparing Prayers of Support

Written by Rev. Dr Chris Walker

The Assembly Working Group on Worship makes available to congregations “Prayers of Lament in relation to sexual abuse”.

Over the past months, the Assembly Working Group on Worship has been preparing prayers which can be used in congregations and small groups within the Church by way of support and comfort for people who have been affected by experiences and stories of sexual abuse of children.

In the context of the information which has come out from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse this week, at its meeting on 6-7 February, the Working Group on Worship considers it timely to advise the Church of this resource.

The convenor of the Working Group Rev. Dr Graham Vawser says:

“To a greater or lesser extent, all people in our nation have been touched by the failure of the Church and the secular community to protect our children, and particularly the most vulnerable of them.  These prayers are offered as a resource to assist people to name before God the distress, hurt and offence we feel, and to hear again that God is with us in our pain.”

These prayers are available on the Assembly website.
