Connecting across the Tasman

Written by By UCA President Dr Deidre Palmer

This week I am in Rotorua New Zealand for the annual Conference of the leaders in the Uniting Church in Australia and the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in New Zealand.

I am joined by the six Moderators of the Uniting Church in Australia and we are together with the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand and the President of the Methodist Church in New Zealand.

It has been a refreshing time together, as we share with our colleagues in ministry some of the challenges we are facing and the hopes we have for our churches.

Being in such a beautiful space, we have been inspired to reflect on God’s renewal of the whole Creation.

One of our common concerns and hopes is how we as churches provide leadership in responding to the global challenge of climate change and modelling care for creation in our respective island nations.

During this time of listening and learning, we have prayed together and enjoyed conversations with one another.

Over the next few days, I am looking forward to talking about how we, as the church, engage with government and visiting community service organisations associated with the Methodist Church.
