A First Peoples' Heart

Each week up until the Federal Election, we will focus on one area of our recently released Vision Statement and invite feedback and discussion from Uniting Church members.

The Statement, titled Our Vision for a Just Australia, expresses our hopes for First Peoples to have a voice in the decision-making of our country.

This week we look at the first foundation of our Vision Statement, A First Peoples' Heart.

In line with the Statement from the Heart, we seek a constitutionally enshrined First Peoples' voice to the Federal Government.

What did First Peoples leaders say in their submission to Parliament?

Read this summary from Assembly Consultant Covenanting Stuart McMillan and the full submission.

One of the foundations of that vision is having First Peoples at the very heart of what it means to be Australian.

What are you doing to further reconciliation between First and Second Peoples in your community?

Here are five steps you can take:

  1. Begin worship with an Acknowledgement of First Peoples.
  2. Read the Statement from the Heart.
  3. Research your local Indigenous community – its history, language and culture.
  4. Host a Day of Mourning Service in the lead up to 26 January.
  5. Begin a relationship with Congress and or our local Indigenous community.

Do you do these in your congregation or faith community?

Please share your stories with others in the Uniting Church via the Uniting Church in Australia Facebook page, the UnitingChurchAu Twitter account using the hashtag #ajustaustralia.
