A nationwide climate action led by school students is taking place on Friday 15 May.

Whilst there are many issues of concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important not to lose focus on the crucial issues confronting our planet and all creation brought about by climate change.

This crisis and the current lockdown globally have shown us, in small ways, how the planet can recover if we reduce our carbon outputs and pollution generally.

As countries like ours gradually return to normal, it is important that economic recovery and government policy move us into a sustainable future for all creation.

UCA diversity shines in adversity

Uniting Church President Dr Deidre Palmer and Rob Floyd and Rev Dr Apwee Ting from the Assembly Resourcing Unit staff held a videoconference catch-up with leaders of nine National Conferences within the UCA on 22 April 2020.

The meeting included leaders from our Fijian, Ibero-Latino, Middle East, Korean, Samoan, Tamil, Chinese, Tongan and Filipino National Conferences.

After opening the meeting, Deidre provided an update of the Church’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other work currently being undertaken by the Assembly.

Each National Conference leader shared from their own context in the midst of COVID-19.

Together for Justice

Earlier this week I had the privilege to host a gathering of people engaged in social justice and advocacy across the life of the Uniting Church.

Twenty-five people representing Synods, Synod-based and national agencies came together at St Stephen’s Macquarie Street in central Sydney.

Together as one in the body of Christ

More than 90 people came together for the second Middle East National Conference of the Uniting Church held in Bankstown in south-western Sydney from 4-5 November.

Representing a range of countries including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and Palestine, people came to share in fellowship and worship, and to reflect on the theme, “Looking to the Future”.

The new Assembly Resourcing Unit

This week the new Assembly Resourcing Unit (ARU) met for the first time in the National Assembly offices in Sydney.

The ARU will give oversight to a number of areas of work within the Assembly, supported by the Working Groups and Reference Committees that the Assembly has appointed, including justice, doctrine, worship, Christian unity, multicultural and cross cultural ministry, education, evangelism, discipleship and relations with other faiths.

Honouring Our Tongan Connections

Their Majesties, King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u of Tonga opened a new school buildings at Sydney's Newington College this week, in a ceremony that honoured longstanding close connections between respective churches and states.

Uniting Church leaders were honoured to be in attendance.
