Gifts of Reconciliation and Peace

President Stuart McMillan preached at Darwin Memorial Uniting Church to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin - and a wonderful act of reconciliation by the Japanese salvage merchant Ryugo Fujita.

At the conclusion of the service, Mr McMillan dedicated the Memorial Reflection Pool in the Church’s Peace Garden which features a number of plaques commemorating the ships salvaged from Darwin Harbour in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Support for Australian Muslim leaders

The Uniting Church in Australia affirms its friendship and ongoing collaboration with the Muslim community after three Australian Islamic leaders were targeted in an ISIS propaganda video.

In the video the terrorist group condemns Islamic scholars from around the world for discouraging violence in the name of Islam, including the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, NSW Police Force chaplain Sheikh Ahmed Abdo and youth leader Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman, Fairfax Media reported.

A theology of impact

Three Uniting Church ministers from the Middle Eastern diaspora, the National Director of Uniting World and myself spent seven days in Beirut, Lebanon in January.

Why did we go? In Romans chapter 12, verse 5 we are reminded that: “We in Christ though many form one body and each member belongs to all the others.” We went to be present for our sisters and brothers in Christ.

Statement re Daily Telegraph coverage

Today’s Daily Telegraph has run a series of inaccurate and vexatious news items about the Uniting Church and our Uniting community services agency in NSW and the ACT. The accusation on the front page of the newspaper that the Church is removing Christ and religious symbols is totally incorrect.

Racist Remarks Condemned

The President of the Uniting Church in Australia Stuart McMillan has condemned as racist comments made by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton about Lebanese-Muslim Australians.

Mr Dutton has suggested that the arrival of Lebanese Muslims in the 1970s is partly to blame for a small number of Australians joining ISIS/Daesh as foreign fighters.
