Uniting Church in Australia President Stuart McMillan has called on the Australian Government to ensure the safety of refugees on Manus Island who remain inside the main detention facility which was shut down on Tuesday.

Around 600 refugees have refused to leave because they fear their safety outside of the Regional Processing Centre.

US Refugee Deal Raises Hope and Questions

The President of the Uniting Church in Australia Stuart McMillan has welcomed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s recent announcement of a ‘one-off’ agreement with the United States to resettle refugees currently detained on Nauru and Manus Island. 

While details of the arrangement remain vague, President Stuart McMillan has welcomed the thrust of the announcement.

Palm Sunday rallies

Hundreds of Uniting Church members marched for refugee justice on Palm Sunday, urging the Federal Government to let 267 asylum seekers in danger of deportation stay in Australia.

“Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here!” rang through parks and public squares across the country, with Uniting Church logos and messages prominent among the banners and placards.

The Uniting Church in Australia is one of more than 100 Australian organisations calling for an immediate moratorium on transfers to immigration detention facilities on Nauru and Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

The call by churches, human rights groups, aid agencies, faith-based organisations and others follows the case of a five-year-old girl who attempted to commit suicide after an extended period of detention on Nauru.
